Canto van het Berkenmeer, A Belgian Malinois, was born March 1, 2003. He spent his first 3 1/2 years in Europe competing in International Working Dog Trials (IPO). The trials are broken down into three levels, and three phases per level, Obedience, Tracking, and Protection. Once a dog has earned enough pointes in each phase, he earns a “title”. The titles are IPO I, II, and III, Title I being a novice, and Title III being an expert. Canto has earned a title of an IPO III.

He was then sold to Vohne Liche Kennels owned and operated by Ken Licklider in Denver, Indiana. The Howard County Sheriff Dept. purchased Canto from Vohne Liche to use as dual purpose Sheriff Canine. His handler, Corporal Paul Cherry and Canto completed a Police Canine School of five weeks at Vohne Liche Kennels.

Canto is a dual purpose Sheriff Canine. He is trained in locating several Narcotic drugs, and patrol work, such as Control, Obedience, Apprehension, Building and Area Searches, Tracking, and Handler Protection.
